I think it’s fair to say that we have all been pushed out of our comfort zones amidst the pandemic. Unfortunately, untold numbers of people are also unemployed, laid off, or still employed but with no certainty in the future.
Now that the shell shock has worn off, it’s time to take action and be proactive to get our lives back on track. There are people who have thrived out of sheer creativity. We all have this ability, we’re just not taught how to tap into our hidden talents. (Yes, I said “we all”.)
For me, I have a newfound sense of immense gratitude. Gratitude for first responders, doctors, nurses, etc. Also gratitude for basic items that we took for granted such as water, paper towels, toilet paper, and let’s not forget good health.
When thinking about reinventing yourself, you need to take stock of everything you are grateful for. You may still be upset about quarantine, and not being to live as you did pre-pandemic. You need to start from a positive mental place and you can’t do this by living in the past. That includes yesterday.
Next, take an honest look at yourself and your career. Were you doing something that you absolutely loved for a living? Were you trading hours for dollars? I think we all got a crash course in “life is short”. Let’s spend the remaining time doing something we love.
Create a list, write it out. Writing promotes thinking. I’m sure there are things that you have always had in the back of your mind but never had cause or reason to even attempt. Think of things your interested in. Experience and knowledge does not matter, I speak from experience. You can go cold turkey into an industry that you know nothing about as long as you love it. It is a huge false belief that you need to plan out and know every detail to change your career. You can start a successful business from scratch and learn as you go. We have endless resources, all available online. Success leaves clues, so you do not have to re-invent the wheel, you need to re-invent yourself!
Find people who are already successful at what you are interested in and study what they are doing. You don’t need to copy it 100%, you may already have an instinct about some things that you would do differently. When you love something, your instincts will kick in and serve you well. Practice firm decision making, make a decision by cutting off all other options. Follow through with your decision, if you find that you picked the wrong option, congratulations… you have learned from this experience. Keep going forward by doing.
Time is precious, time is now. Take action towards your goal. Start by looking at your current image, work habits. Find some areas that you want to improve and do it. You must do it only for yourself. If you do anything to please others, you are not being truthful to yourself. Remember that when you elevate yourself, everyone around you benefits as well. Do not announce what you are doing, just get going and let everyone wonder why you’re changing for the better!
